What is Postpartum Hair Loss?
Postpartum hair loss is a normal physiological response to pregnancy and childbirth. During pregnancy, hormones cause hair to remain in the growth phase, leading to thicker, fuller locks. However, after giving birth, hormone levels rapidly drop, causing hair to enter the shedding phase. This process can be alarming for new moms, but it’s a completely normal part of the postpartum experience.
How Common is Postpartum Hair Loss?
Postpartum hair loss is incredibly common. In fact, up to 70% of women experience it in the months following childbirth. While it can be distressing to see lots of hair falling out, it’s important to remember that this is a temporary condition that usually resolves by looking after your hair, being patient and using gentle products to nurture and strengthen your hair. Usually by the time your baby is celebrating their 1st birthday your hair should be on its way back to its pre-pregnancy self.
When Does Postpartum Hair Loss Occur?
Postpartum hair loss typically begins around 3 months after giving birth and can last for up to a year. The shedding phase may be more noticeable in some women than others, depending on factors such as hair type, length, and thickness.
Managing Postpartum Hair Loss
While postpartum hair loss can’t be prevented, there are steps you can take to manage it. These include:
- Eating a nutritious diet rich in vitamins and minerals that support hair health, such as iron, zinc, and biotin.
- Avoiding hairstyles that put stress on the hair, such as tight ponytails and braids.
- Using a gentle shampoo and conditioner with no harsh ingredients that won’t further damage or stress hair.
- Being patient and gentle with your hair, avoiding excessive brushing or heat styling.
