Hi, and welcome to Hair Health Essentials. My name is Clare Devereux and I’m a Trichologist and a stylist. Now, this week I’m gonna be focusing on postpartum hair loss and how it affects you and what you’re going through and explaining it to you so that you can understand that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
As someone who has suffered with very bad postpartum hair loss, when I have my daughter, I really understand that it’s a very traumatic time. First of all, what is postpartum hair loss? Well, let’s just say on a general daily basis, everyone loses 80 to a hundred hairs, and that’s normal. But when you’re pregnant, your hair goes into a holding phase, and that’s why your hair looks fabulous.
Usually when you’re pregnant, it’s lustrous, it’s thick, it’s full of volume, and most women, and most friends of mine always tell me that it’s the best hair of their life. And then we fast forward to a couple of months after your bundle of joy has been born and you’re in this postpartum phase and what happens is your estrogen level has dropped.
So when you’re pregnant, your estrogen level is very high. But after you’ve had your baby, a couple of months down the line, your estrogen level drops, and that means that the hair that was in this holding phase then goes into this shedding phase. Now, this shedding phase happens very rapidly. So instead of 80 to a hundred hairs a day, you’re now losing 300 to 400 hairs a day. And that’s why you’ll find your ponytail feels thinner, your hair feels thinner, your hair is lacking volume, and usually you end up with an awful lot of shorter bits around your hairline. So you get these like post-pregnancy bangs and they don’t look very good. They’re very hard to deal with and very hard to style.
And that’s why I hope you’re gonna join me here, because I’m gonna be telling you so much more about postpartum hair loss. How to look after your hair, how to get it to grow quicker, how to keep it strong during this phase, and how to give you hope because I know it’s a traumatic and a stressful time, especially with a new baby.
So I really wanna give you hope that by the time your baby is one, your hair is gonna be back to its pre-pregnancy levels looking fabulous, lustrous, thick and full of volume again. So I look forward to you joining me here on the steering at Hair Health Essentials, and I’ll see you tomorrow.
