The GLP-1 Hair Support Edit

Selected by Clare Devereux — Clinical Trichologist, Harley Street & Dublin

A four-product routine for anyone experiencing hair changes alongside GLP-1 medication — Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, or Zepbound. Gentle daily care combined with targeted scalp support, selected to work with your body during this transition.

What this routine addresses

Hair shedding after starting Ozempic, Wegovy, or Mounjaro.

GLP-1 medications can trigger a type of temporary shedding called telogen effluvium — usually 2 to 4 months after starting or adjusting the dose. It's driven by rapid body change and reduced nutritional intake, not by the medication damaging your hair. This routine supports your hair through that phase.

Hair that feels thinner or less dense than before you started medication.

When appetite is suppressed, protein and key micronutrients — particularly iron and zinc — often fall without you realising. Hair needs these as raw materials. The Rosemary Strength Oil in this Edit supports the scalp environment while you work with your GP to address any nutritional gaps.

More hair in the brush, on the pillow, in the shower drain.

Rapid weight change puts the body under physiological load. Hair is consistently one of the first places that internal stress shows up. This routine doesn't stop the shedding — nothing topical can — but it protects and strengthens the hair you have, so regrowth comes back into a healthier environment.

Worrying about whether the shedding is normal or something more serious.

Shedding during GLP-1 use is a recognised pattern. It doesn't mean the medication is wrong for you. It means your body is adjusting, and your hair is responding to that adjustment. Understanding the mechanism helps — Clare has written about it in detail.

Wanting to do something proactive without interfering with your treatment.

The medication is doing important work. This routine isn't a replacement for medical advice — it's the hair care layer that works alongside it. Gentle cleansing, targeted nourishment, scalp stimulation, and daily protection. What you can control while the body does the rest.

There may be a better starting point if
  • Your scalp is uncomfortable — tightness, flaking, irritation that goes beyond the hair changes. The Scalp Recovery Edit addresses the scalp first, because that foundation has to settle before anything else can work properly
  • Your hair changes are linked to menopause, perimenopause, or post-pregnancy rather than medication. The Hormonal Hair Support Edit is designed for those specific transitions
  • Your hair was thinning before you started GLP-1 medication. The Volume & Strength Edit contains active scalp-stimulating ingredients and may be a better fit if the thinning predates the medication
  • Your medication is stable, the shedding has settled, and you just want a good daily routine going forward. The Everyday Healthy Hair Edit is the simpler foundation for when the transition is behind you
From Clare

If your hair has changed since starting GLP-1 medication, I want you to know something first: what you’re experiencing is recognised, it’s understood, and in the vast majority of cases, it’s temporary. It doesn’t mean the medication is wrong for you. It means your body is going through a significant transition, and hair is one of the first places that shows.

What’s usually happening is telogen effluvium — a temporary disruption to the hair cycle triggered by rapid body change and reduced nutritional intake. The shedding typically appears 2 to 4 months after starting or adjusting the dose, which is why the connection isn’t always obvious. I see this pattern regularly in my clinics in Dublin and London, and I’ve written about the mechanism and timeline in detail.

This Edit is what I recommend for clients in that situation. The Moisturising Shampoo and Conditioner provide gentle daily care — your hair and scalp need kindness right now, not aggressive cleansing. The Rosemary Strength Oil is the key addition: a weekly pre-shampoo treatment that nourishes the scalp and supports the environment your hair grows from. And the Keratin Glow Mist protects and strengthens what you have, so the hair that regrows comes back into a routine that’s already working for it.

The Experience

The shampoo and conditioner bring warm, fruity notes with woody depth. The oil adds aromatic rosemary and peppermint — fresh and invigorating on the scalp. The mist closes with soft florals and vanilla. Together they feel deliberate and restorative, like a routine that’s taking care of you.

Your Routine

Three steps on wash days, four times a week. Plus a weekly oil treatment that targets the scalp directly.

  • Rosemary Strength Oil (1–2 times per week, before washing)
Apply a small amount directly to the scalp. Massage gently with fingertips for a few minutes. Leave for at least 15 minutes — or overnight if you prefer. Then wash out with the Moisturising Shampoo.
  • Moisturising Shampoo (every wash day)
Apply to wet hair. Lather gently with fingertips, focusing on the scalp. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. Be gentle — your scalp doesn’t need pressure right now.
  • Moisturising Conditioner (every wash day)
Apply to mid-lengths and ends only — keep it away from the scalp. Leave for one to two minutes. Rinse well.
  • Keratin Glow Mist (every wash day + non-wash days)
Towel-dry gently, then mist 15–20cm from hair through mid-lengths and ends. No rinsing. On non-wash days, use on dry hair to refresh and protect.

A note on shedding during washing: seeing hair come out in the shower can be distressing. But washing doesn’t cause shedding — those hairs have already detached from the follicle. Washing simply collects them. Not washing lets them accumulate, which makes the next wash look worse than it is.

Common Questions

Will the shedding stop?

Telogen effluvium is self-limiting in most cases. When your body stabilises — weight loss slows, nutritional intake improves — the hair cycle corrects. Active shedding commonly takes 3 to 6 months to settle. The hair that regrows will benefit from already being in a routine that supports it.

Will these products interfere with my medication?

No. These are topical products that support hair health from the outside — gentle cleansing, nourishment, protection, and scalp care. They don't interact with your medication. If you have concerns about your treatment, speak with your prescribing doctor.

Should I get blood tests?

Ask your GP to check ferritin (stored iron), vitamin D, zinc, and thyroid function. These are the markers most commonly associated with hair shedding, and GLP-1-related appetite suppression can cause them to drop. A normal full blood count doesn't exclude iron deficiency — ferritin needs to be tested specifically.

This is enough. A complete routine for where you are right now. As your body stabilises and the shedding settles, this Edit graduates naturally into the Everyday Healthy Hair Edit — a simpler routine for when the transition is behind you.

From the Studio Notes

Clare has written in detail about why GLP-1 medications can trigger hair shedding, what’s actually happening at the follicle level, and the realistic timeline for recovery. If you’re noticing more hair in your brush, her guide to shedding versus breakage explains what to look for. And if you’re unsure how often to wash while shedding, she’s addressed that too — the answer may not be what you expect.
