The short answer
Greasy hair is not a hygiene problem. It is a scalp function. Every follicle sits inside a sebaceous gland that produces oil — called sebum — on a hormonally driven schedule that does not slow down because you wash less often. If your hair gets oily quickly, the most likely explanation is that your glands produce sebum at a rate your current washing frequency does not match.
Greasy hair is one of the most searched complaints in hair care, and one of the most badly answered. The standard advice — wash less, let your scalp “reset,” avoid stripping the oils — is built on a misunderstanding of how sebum works. It sounds intuitive. It is also, in most cases, the opposite of what helps.
If your hair is greasy within a day of washing, or sometimes within hours, there is a biological explanation. It starts with the gland attached to every hair follicle on your scalp, and it is governed by hormones, not habits.
What sebum is and what it does on your scalp
Sebum is the waxy, lipid-rich substance produced by the sebaceous glands. Every hair follicle has one. These glands sit in the mid-dermis, and they work by a process called holocrine secretion — the cell fills with lipids, then ruptures entirely to release its contents into the follicular canal. From there, sebum travels up the hair shaft by a wicking action, coating both the scalp surface and the hair.
This is not a flaw. Sebum is protective. It provides roughly ninety per cent of the skin’s surface lipids, helps seal moisture into the scalp, carries antimicrobial compounds, and gives hair its natural sheen. The scalp, in particular, has a high density of sebaceous glands — between four hundred and nine hundred per square centimetre — which is why it produces more oil than almost any other area of skin on the body.
The greasy feeling is simply sebum doing what it is supposed to do: arriving on the surface. How quickly it accumulates to a visible level depends on how much your glands are producing and how frequently it is washed away.
Why some people’s greasy hair is worse than others
Sebum production is driven by androgens — the group of hormones that includes testosterone and its more potent derivative, dihydrotestosterone (DHT). The enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which converts testosterone into DHT, is particularly concentrated in the sebaceous glands of the scalp and face. This is why the scalp and the T-zone of the face are the oiliest areas on most people.
What varies between people is not whether androgens are present — they are, in everyone — but how the glands respond. Three local factors determine how much sebum a scalp produces:
The density and size of the sebaceous glands. More glands, or larger ones, means more sebum per unit area. Gland size increases during puberty and does not shrink afterwards.
The amount of 5-alpha reductase activity in the glands. More enzymatic activity means more testosterone is converted to DHT locally, which stimulates higher lipid production.
The number and sensitivity of androgen receptors on the sebocytes. Even at normal circulating hormone levels, a gland with more receptors or more responsive receptors will produce more oil.
This means greasy hair is largely an end-organ trait — set at the gland, not in the bloodstream. Most people with persistently oily scalps have hormone levels well within the normal range. What differs is how their scalp tissue responds to those hormones.
Life stages make a visible difference. Sebum production spikes at puberty, fluctuates through pregnancy and perimenopause, and declines significantly after menopause in women. If your hair became noticeably greasier or less greasy at a particular life stage, {{hormonal|hormonal changes}} are probably why.
The “train your hair” myth and why it persists
The idea that you can train your hair to be less greasy by washing it less often is one of the most repeated pieces of advice in hair care. The logic goes: if you wash less, your scalp will eventually adjust and produce less oil.
The biology says otherwise. Sebum production is controlled by hormones acting on the sebaceous gland, not by feedback from the scalp surface. Washing removes oil that has already been secreted. It does not send a signal back to the gland telling it to slow down. The gland does not know, or care, whether the surface is clean or coated.
What actually happens when you stretch your wash days: sebum accumulates. Dead skin cells mix with oil and environmental debris. This can lead to {{scalp-buildup|scalp buildup}} — visible under magnification as deposits around the follicle openings — which in turn can create an environment where the scalp becomes itchy, flaky, or inflamed. None of this is the scalp “detoxing.” It is the scalp being insufficiently cleansed.
The myth persists because it sounds like it should work, and because some people do experience a brief period where their hair looks less oily after extending washes. That temporary effect is usually just the hair shaft absorbing more oil over time, distributing it further from the roots. The rate of sebum production at the scalp has not changed.
What a trichologist checks on a greasy scalp
When someone comes in with greasy hair as their main concern, the first thing I look at is the scalp itself — not the hair. A {{trichologist|trichologist}} assessment typically includes three things:
The trichoscope. This magnified view of the scalp surface shows whether the oiliness is straightforward sebum or something more complex. Seborrhoeic dermatitis, for instance, looks like greasiness to the person washing their hair but looks like inflammation and Malassezia overgrowth under magnification. The follicular pattern. Excessive or prolonged sebum around the follicle openings can affect the growth environment. In the same way that {{growth-cycle|the hair growth cycle}} depends on the follicular environment, a chronically congested follicle may produce hair that is thinner or weaker — not because the sebum directly damages the hair, but because the environment around the follicle is compromised.
The wider picture. Greasy hair that appeared suddenly, or got markedly worse, can be a signal worth investigating. Polycystic ovary syndrome, thyroid dysfunction, significant stress, and medication changes can all alter sebum output. The hair is doing what the body is telling it to.
What actually helps with greasy hair
The single most effective thing most people with greasy hair can do is wash more often. Not less. {{wash-frequency|Washing your hair more frequently}} does not damage it, does not strip it, and does not train the scalp to produce more oil. It simply removes the sebum that has already arrived on the surface before it reaches the point where hair looks and feels greasy.
For many people, that means daily or every other day. For some — particularly those with high androgen sensitivity, fine hair, or an active lifestyle — it means every day without exception. The right frequency is whatever keeps the scalp comfortably clean between washes. If hair is greasy by evening, the gap is too long.
Beyond frequency, a few things make a measurable difference:
Use a shampoo that actually cleanses. Ultra-gentle, sulphate-free formulas designed to preserve moisture may not remove enough sebum on an oily scalp. A well-formulated clarifying shampoo used once a week alongside a regular cleanser can prevent accumulation without over-drying the lengths.
Shampoo the scalp, not the hair. The scalp is where the oil is produced. Concentrate the shampoo there — work it in with your fingertips — and let the lather run through the lengths as you rinse. This cleans the source without over-handling hair that does not need it.
Avoid adding oil to an oily scalp. Scalp oils, heavy serums, and leave-in treatments applied to the roots add to the load. If the scalp is already producing more sebum than it can clear between washes, adding more lipid to the surface makes the problem worse.
If nothing changes despite the right routine, seek a professional assessment. Persistent, unexplained greasiness — particularly if accompanied by flaking, shedding, or changes in hair texture — is worth investigating. A trichoscope assessment takes minutes and can distinguish routine oiliness from a scalp condition.

Because your sebaceous glands are producing sebum at a rate that exceeds what one wash can keep ahead of for a full day. This is particularly common in people with fine hair, high androgen sensitivity, or dense sebaceous glands. It is not a sign of over-washing — it is a sign the scalp produces oil quickly.
There is limited evidence that high-glycaemic diets may influence sebum production, primarily through their effect on insulin and androgens. However, for most people, the dominant driver is genetics and hormonal activity, not diet. Making dramatic dietary changes specifically to reduce scalp oiliness is unlikely to produce a noticeable result.
Greasy hair itself does not cause hair loss. However, the same hormonal mechanism that drives sebum production — androgen activity at the follicle — is also involved in androgenetic alopecia. An oily scalp and thinning hair can co-occur because they share a hormonal driver, not because one causes the other. If both are present, a trichologist assessment is worth considering.
Dry shampoo absorbs surface oil and can extend the appearance of clean hair between washes, but it does not cleanse the scalp. Used regularly in place of actual washing, it adds powder and starch to the sebum layer rather than removing it. As an occasional convenience it is fine. As a scalp care strategy it creates exactly the conditions that lead to buildup.
If your scalp is persistently oily despite washing at the right frequency with an appropriate shampoo, or if the oiliness is accompanied by flaking, redness, itching, odour, or increased shedding, a trichologist assessment is worth having. These can indicate conditions like seborrhoeic dermatitis or follicular inflammation that look like ordinary greasiness but need different management.
