Just as our skin changes throughout our lives, so does our hair. Genetics, hormones, health, nutrition and the way we care for our hair all shape how it looks and behaves, and perimenopause and menopause are a common turning point. The haircare routine that worked beautifully at 25 may not be the one you need at 45 or 55. It’s not necessarily about buying more products. It’s about choosing the right ones and using them in the right way.
Why the hair you’ve always known can suddenly feel different — and how to fall in love with it again.
Have you ever looked in the mirror and thought, “What has happened to my hair?”
Perhaps it doesn’t have the volume it once had. Maybe it’s become drier, frizzier or more difficult to style. The products you’ve used for years don’t seem to work anymore, and the hairstyle you’ve always loved suddenly doesn’t look quite the same.
Sound familiar?
It’s something I hear from women all the time.
And often, they’re not necessarily experiencing hair loss. They simply feel that their hair isn’t what it used to be.
They’ve fallen out of love with their hair.
But here’s something I always remind my clients: just as our skin changes throughout our lives, so does our hair.
And sometimes, rather than trying harder with the same old routine, what we really need is a fresh perspective.
Your Hair Changes as You Do
Think about the hair you had in your teens or twenties.
Perhaps it was thicker, shinier, easier to manage or naturally full of volume. You might have been able to wash it, give it a quick blow-dry and walk out the door feeling fabulous.
Fast-forward ten, twenty or thirty years, and things may look a little different.
Our hair is influenced by genetics, hormones, health, nutrition, lifestyle and the way we care for it.
Over time, the diameter of individual hair fibres, overall density, natural oil production and even the way our hair behaves can change.
For some women, this means finer hair. For others, it might mean dryness, increased frizz, a loss of volume or hair that simply doesn’t respond to styling in the way it once did.
And although these changes are common, they don’t mean you have to settle for hair you’re unhappy with.
Perimenopause, Menopause and the Hair You Once Knew
One of the most significant periods of change for many women is perimenopause and menopause.
As hormone levels fluctuate and eventually decline, some women notice changes in hair density, texture and condition.
Hair may feel finer, become more fragile or appear less full around the parting and crown. Others find their hair feels drier, more unruly or increasingly difficult to style.
But not every woman experiences the same changes, and not every hair concern during menopause is caused by hormones.
Thyroid conditions, nutritional deficiencies, stress, medications and the cumulative effects of colouring and heat styling may also contribute.
That’s why understanding the individual is so important.
There is no one-size-fits-all approach to menopausal hair.
And while we can’t turn back the clock, we can absolutely rethink how we care for our hair as it changes.
Perhaps It’s Not Your Hair. Perhaps It’s Your Haircare Routine.
Here’s something I often say to women who come to see me:
The haircare routine that worked beautifully for you at 25 may not be the routine you need at 45 or 55.
You might still be using the same shampoo, conditioner, styling products and techniques you’ve relied on for years.
But if your hair has changed, perhaps your routine needs to change too.
A shampoo that once left your hair feeling fabulous might now leave it feeling flat. A heavy conditioner that worked on thick hair may overwhelm finer lengths. Or perhaps your hair now needs more conditioning, improved heat protection or a different approach to styling.
Even something as simple as changing your blow-drying technique, choosing a more suitable brush or introducing the right leave-in product can make a noticeable difference to how your hair looks and feels.
It’s not necessarily about buying more products.
It’s about choosing the right products and using them in the right way.
You Don’t Have to Be Losing Your Hair to See a Trichologist
This is something I’m particularly passionate about.
Many women assume that visiting a trichologist is only necessary if they’re experiencing significant hair loss, thinning or a scalp condition.
But my approach at Hair Health Essentials goes beyond that.
Of course, investigating hair shedding, thinning and scalp concerns is an important part of my work.
However, I also work with women who simply want to understand why their hair has changed and what they can do to make it look and feel beautiful again.
Perhaps you’ve lost volume. Your hair has become difficult to manage. You’re unhappy with the condition of your lengths, or you’ve found yourself wearing the same hairstyle every day because nothing else seems to work.
These concerns matter too.
And sometimes, a fresh pair of expert eyes can make all the difference.
Where Trichology Meets Beautiful Hair
One of the things that makes my approach different is my background in both international hairdressing and trichology.
Having worked for years as an international stylist, I understand the importance of beautiful hair — the cut, the movement, the texture, the products and the techniques that help hair look its best.
As a trichologist, I also understand the science behind hair growth, scalp health and the factors that influence hair condition and density.
Bringing these two areas together allows me to look at the bigger picture.
During a personalised consultation, we can explore your hair history, your current concerns, your scalp health, your lifestyle and the products and techniques you’re using at home.
Where appropriate, I can examine your hair and scalp using trichoscopy and recommend further investigation if there are signs of an underlying medical concern.
But equally importantly, we can look at the practical side of your hair.
What’s working? What isn’t? What could we change?
From your cleansing and conditioning routine to styling techniques, product choices and managing changes in texture or volume, the aim is to create a tailored approach that works for your hair as it is today.
Because healthy hair is important, but so is having hair that makes you feel fabulous.
It’s Time to Fall Back in Love With Your Hair
Our relationship with our hair is deeply personal.
For many women, hair is connected to identity, confidence and how we feel when we look in the mirror.
And when it changes, it’s easy to feel frustrated or disconnected from the hair we once loved.
But I don’t believe we should spend our lives trying to recreate the hair we had at 20.
Instead, I believe in understanding the hair we have now and helping it look and feel its very best.
Sometimes that means addressing a scalp or hair health concern. Sometimes it means introducing a completely new haircare routine. And sometimes it’s simply about looking at your hair differently.
Whatever stage of life you’re at, whether you’re navigating postpartum changes, perimenopause, menopause or simply noticing that your hair isn’t behaving the way it used to, you deserve advice that’s tailored to you.
Because you haven’t necessarily fallen out of love with your hair. Perhaps you just haven’t discovered what it needs now.
At Hair Health Essentials, my goal is to combine expert trichology with beautiful, practical haircare advice, helping you understand your hair, embrace its changes and feel confident again.
After all, I don’t just want you to have healthier hair.
I want you to fall back in love with your hair.
